History 1970-1990

More improvements were added in the early 1970's to Clifford Baptist Church. In 1972 Mr. Will Mays donated an acre of land located in the back of the building to the church. Mr. May's grandfather, William Mays, donated the church's first acre of land. In 1973 the two small bathrooms were installed in the front of the bulding. The early 70's saw changes in population of the church. Membership was at 223 with 7 baptisms recorded for the year 1972. The church receipts were $16,117.00.

Clifford Baptist Church utilized the duties of two pastors during the early 70's.
 Rev. Earl Owenby 1971 - 1973 & Rev. Irvin Booth 1973-1979

A significant piece of history occurred on March 3, 1974. The church paid off the church parsonage and it was celebrated with a note burning ceremony.

In 1978 major building improvements included a choir loft and baptistry. The improvements also included four Sunday School rooms.

We ended the 1970's with the resignation of Rev. Irvin Booth and began the new year, January 2, 1980 with the Rev. Peter dePlessis.

In the 1980's emphasis was added on the WMU organizations: Mission Friends, G.A.'s, R.A.'s and Acteens.

In all, Clifford Baptist Church saw a growing, maturing year in 1981 in the life of our church under the leadership of Rev. duPlessis. However, 1982 bruoght about the resignation of Rev. dePlessis but also gave us a wonderful new pastor, Rev. Michael Fitzgerald. Rev. Fitzgerald preached our first sermon on June 6, 1982. In August 1982 Pastor Mike and Gwen were married.

1984 marked the 75th anniversary of our church. By the mid to late 1980's the church concluded its 75th anniversary by mourning the passing of the Rev. Clarence Bainbridge, whose widow, Doris, continues to remainn active as our church organist. We also celebrated our church becoming debt free when the church was paid off. By 1989 church membership was at 300.

From the humble beginnings of children's sermons to deacons, to a full congregation in the Minnie Stinnett Chapel, the 1980's was just a small stream in the sea of people that would touch the lies of those who were and are part of the Clifford family as we continue through the years.
